Taking the leap from the past to the future: Seize control and own your destiny.

Recently, I spoke with an associate about changing careers. It wasn’t long ago that I faced a similar turning point. After enduring nearly 12 years in a dead-end role, I made the bold decision to take control of my career and own my destiny. Despite my strong performance appraisals and glowing feedback from both management and customers, I found myself unable to progress. My associate’s story echoed mine—a talented individual stifled by circumstances beyond their control.

Take Control of Your Career and Own Your Destiny

When opportunities seem scarce or unreachable, it’s easy to feel stuck. My associate had been with their employer for five years, only to discover their leadership had preselected candidates for internal promotions, leaving the rest of the team to go through the motions of applying in vain. This frustration is common, but it begs an important question: What are you waiting for?

Always Be Prepared for Opportunities

Opportunities can arise when you least expect them, and preparation is key to owning your destiny. If you haven’t taken steps to ready yourself, even the most promising doors may remain closed. Whether it’s enhancing your skills, networking, or staying informed about industry trends, preparation ensures you can seize the moment when the time comes.

How Toxic Managers Can Derail Your Career

Toxic managers often hinder your ability to progress. They may claim to support your growth but ultimately prioritize their own interests. Recognizing their behaviors can help you avoid unnecessary roadblocks.

Signs of Toxic Management

  1. Self-Serving Interests - Toxic managers often discourage personal growth to maintain their team’s performance, prioritizing company needs over employee development.

  2. Bait and Switch - These managers assign you high-visibility projects but take full credit for the results, advancing their careers while leaving you stagnant.

  3. Criticism and Manipulation - Highly critical managers might discourage you from pursuing new opportunities, often citing a “lack of readiness” or giving disparaging references.

The Power of Taking Control

Years ago, I managed accounts for a Fortune 100 company. Despite doubling the portfolio’s revenue, my leadership team blocked me from pursuing opportunities that aligned with my goals. Their reasoning? My absence might hurt the business. Eventually, I realized I had to take control of my career to protect myself and pursue my aspirations.

Develop a Plan to Own Your Destiny

Waiting for others to recognize your potential is not a strategy. Instead:

  • Set specific, time-sensitive goals.

  • Commit to actionable steps toward your dream job.

  • Invest energy into building the career you want, even as you fulfill your current responsibilities.

Never Let Others Define Your Worth

Remember, no employer holds ultimate control over your career. You have the power to shape your path. If you feel undervalued or stuck, take the steps necessary to move forward. Whether it’s acquiring new skills, exploring a different industry, or stepping away from toxic environments, every action you take brings you closer to owning your destiny.

Taking control of your career isn’t just about finding a new job—it’s about reclaiming your time, potential, and purpose. You deserve to live on your terms, not someone else’s timeline. Start today, and own your destiny.
